The Mental Health Foundation recognises Mental Health Day on 10 October. This is a chance to reflect on mental health and ensure it is treated on par with physical health. It is a chance to talk about mental health in general, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to talk about things and get help if you are struggling.

The theme for 2022 set by the Mental Health Foundation is ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’. To do this we want to share some simple tips to improving your mental health that could make a big difference.

Practicing self-care

Self-care plays an incredibly important role in looking after your mental health. Journaling, keeping a diary and writing lists each day can help keep your mind healthy by tracking and controlling your thoughts and feelings. Choose from Paperchases beautiful range of stationary notebooks and diaries in-store and begin to jot down what’s on your mind.

Find ways to relax

If there’s something that helps you relax, try to find time to fit it into your day. Taking a break from your busy life and doing something you enjoy is important. This could be picking up a new book at Waterstones or going for a walk round one of Manchester’s parks. Essential oils can be used as a natural remedy to help relieve anxiety and stress. You can pick these up from the likes of Superdrug or Boots. Rituals also have a great calming range, ‘The Ritual of Jing’, where you can find products to help you relax and sleep.

Connect with others

Connecting with others can help us have a greater sense of belonging and reduce feelings of loneliness. Reach out to friends and family and meet for a coffee and chat. Opening up to a trusted friend or family member can help you feel listened to and supported. If you’re here for a coffee, there are a few quiet places you might like to try. Head upstairs to Caffe Nero mezzanine and grab a table away from the hustle bustle. Or walk to the back of Waterstones to discover Café W, a quiet space to meet up. And great coffee and cake!

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to the present moment, using techniques like meditation, breathing exercises and yoga. It’s been shown to help people become more aware of their thoughts and feelings.

In light of World Mental Health Day, Rituals hosted a ‘Mindfulness for Modern Life’ masterclass hosted by comedian, TV writer, author and leading voice in the mental health space, Ruby Wax. The 5-day masterclass has been designed to serve as either an introduction to mindfulness for those that have never tried it, or to be used as a reference and guide for those that want to amplify their current practice.

It’s as important to look after your mental health as it is to look after your body. Good mental health and wellbeing will support you in living a happy and healthy life. More information on expert advice, help and support for mental health issues can be found here.
