Manchester’s biggest icons are about to get even bigger at Manchester Arndale

Manchester has never been a city to do things by halves. From music legends and football heroes to fearless campaigners and creative pioneers, our city has always produced people who make their mark on the world. This summer, we’re celebrating them in a way that’s impossible to miss with MCR Made – a free exhibition bringing the iconic work of Manchester artist Stanley Chow to life throughout Manchester Arndale.

A celebration of Manchester’s greatest names

From Monday 3rd August to Saturday 24th October, Manchester Arndale will become home to 13 giant inflatable portraits, suspended throughout the centre and standing up to an incredible six metres tall.

Created by internationally acclaimed illustrator Stanley Chow, the exhibition celebrates the Mancunians whose talent, determination and creativity have helped shape Manchester’s reputation across music, sport, science, politics, art and culture.

Whether you’re a lifelong local or just visiting the city, MCR Made is a chance to see some familiar faces in a whole new way.

What’s there to see?

MCR Made has been designed to get you exploring. As you make your way around Manchester Arndale, you’ll discover each larger-than-life portrait, creating the perfect excuse to wander the centre and snap a few unforgettable photos along the way.

Keep an eye out for Manchester favourites including Liam and Noel Gallagher, Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Emmeline Pankhurst, Alan Turing, L.S. Lowry, Lemn Sissay, Caroline Aherne, Aitch and more.

Whether you’ve got a favourite footballer, musician or local legend, there’s plenty to discover – and even more reasons to fill your camera roll.

Stanley Chow’s unmistakable style

Few artists capture Manchester quite like Stanley Chow. Born and based in the city, his bold, minimalist portraits have become instantly recognisable around the world, with everyone from musicians and actors to politicians and sporting stars featured in his distinctive style.

For MCR Made, Stanley has also created a brand new portrait of Ellen Wilkinson, celebrating one of Manchester’s most inspiring trailblazers. A suffragette, women’s rights campaigner and the first female Education Secretary in the British cabinet, Ellen’s legacy continues to inspire today.

Her portrait also shines a light on Manchester Arndale’s Ask for Ellen initiative, which provides free sanitary products for anyone who needs them. Launched in 2022, the initiative helps tackle period poverty and honours Ellen Wilkinson’s lifelong commitment to improving opportunities for women and girls.
